New Z Visa Regulations, Jan 15, 2008

15th Jan, as a worker you can't apply for a Z visa / residence permit yourself, you have to get a 'senior officer' at your company to do it for you.

This is a matter for schools and not for visa seekers, Er.. well.. The school is responsible for this step before the visa seeker can apply.. so not really important for the teacher / visa seeker - they will not be dealing with this step in the process. As far as obtaining the residence permit / status. The schools (employers) have to deal with the PSB and relevant local and provincal SAFEA departments.. I can't see anyone wanting to - or having to do these steps on their own, aside from needing to speak fluent Chinese to navigate the requirements, it would be a true exercise in futility. Let the Chinese deal with the Chinese and your employer handle important visa issues.

That being said, its important to understand and be aware of the visa regulations to cover your Kaboose.

READ THIS OVER ON THATSBJ

Not a big update, but the speed things are changing at these days, thought it's better to keep everyone up to date on what we do know.

Anyhow, flew back into Beijing yesterday, and was told that a few things had changed, as of February first.

Firstly, you no longer need to fill in a medical slip upon arrival. Before, you had to declare that you had no diseases, or hadn't been around chickens, in the last week or something. Anyhow, no more of that now.

Secondly, no more customs declarations upon entering China (though when i left on 4th, you still had to fill in one to leave). Before, you needed to declare what you were carrying, when you came back into country. Now, only if you are carrying over the life (but seriously, who does??) do you need to fill out the form.

Lastly, and perhaps most important, is the entry form, that you need to fill in. Before, this was just one piece of paper, that you filled in, and was kept by the immigration officer when you came in.

Now however, it comes in two parts. Both parts require teh same information as you gave on the old sheet, but now, it is separated, and one half is left in your passport. It says to keep hold of it, otherwise you could delay your departure from China (much in the same way as the American immigration paper.)

This important piece of information suggests that they are indeed going to be implementing a more formal tracking system with regards aliens in China. Again, it by itself is not likely to be of major importance, but when coupled with other changes to the visa, and housing registration processes, it will be important to bare in mind.

It also reminds you on the back to register within 24 hours, if you are living in private accommodation (or 72 if you live in Tong Zhou ) and too call 119 if you need help. I'd be very interested to see if that actually works....
