About 2 years ago my z-visa started to come lose from my rapidly filling passport book. Sometime in the last year, I thought (foolishly) that my z-visa wasn't important after having obtained 3 consecutive resident permits I had no idea anyone would care if it came out of my book. Now I have been told that the z-visa is important and my passport book is almost full. In the city I'm going to work in next year I don't think it's going to be a problem, but I want to deal with this situation.
It seems I should kill 2 birds with one stone, so if someone renews their passport how do they replace their visas? Is it possible to replace my Z visa in China? (Do the Chinese consulates-PSB have a record of my z-visa somewhere??)
If I travel to the USA (home) can I use a Chinese medical certificate to apply for a new z visa?
Ultimately I'm looking for the least expensive method..

If your passport is not due to expire, you can simple have the state dept or passport agency add visa pages to it. If you have to renew, you will be issued a new passport number. (Yes, stupid I know) I have heard that some people bring their old passport with them having the visa inside of it, along with the new passport to gain exit or entry. Let's face it though, its a pain in the - and you cannot obtain a new z visa in China at this time. You will be told that you need to leave the country and return back to the USA. You can't even go to Vietnam, Thailand or Korea to get the work visa anylonger. We are procesing about thirty teaches visas right now who went to those countries and got stuck out there because the consulate told them to go back to the USA.
I am confused as to why the older visa would have any relevance accept in the situation where perhaps your entry and exit stamps where on the page adjacent to it? As long as you have a residence permit that is curent I dont see where the problem is. Visa just gets you into the country. Residence permit takes over the z visa. Who told you this?
The medical certificate is important for residence formalities in China, we never use the medical forms when applying for the visas. You will need invitation documents, 1. From SAFEA 2. Ministry of Foreign Affairs 3. Original Passport 4. Completed Application form 5. 2x2 Passport Size Photo (COLOR)

Thank you for your reply.
A school in JiangXi basically said I would have to leave the country to renew my residence permit. I had left a private school that had updated my permit under the "either party can walk away in 90 days" clause in my contract that I started last summer and moved back to a University job. I have a feeling the University just didn't want to renew my permit for the sake of money since my permit was good past the time of the University job. I was also under the impression it wasn't an issue before the FAO here said something. My new school said that they could get a new residence permit without the z visa as long as I had a current permit also.

Oh I see, unless that province changed its policy you should be able to do that using a letter of release and your current residence permit. Your new school employer basically applies for all the same documents that you would need to get your z visa, but with a leter of release and your current residence permit, it should not be a problem. Its hard to say, with all the new visa regulations. We're familiar with what we need on this side of the pond, but we've got alot of different information about how each province handles these things.
There's a couple of people on this board who should know more about your situation though.
cheers

z-visa, you offer international visa processing service right? Can a person just mail their passport to you from China and you can process the visa there in the states?

Yeah, thats been covered in another post. But the problem is that some of these so called, "Educators" cant even spell their own name correctly. (I'm very serious) and although the process is fairly simple, alot of folks cant read written or follow oral instruction. We've got some schools working with us on this, which makes the process alot smoother. But you still have to consider the exit and entry stamp issues. Visa is one thing, but you still have to get the entry and exit stamp in your passport.
