U.S. Women Gymnasts Denied Visa by China
Associated Press
Alternates to the U.S. women’s gymnastics team were denied visas to get into China and train for the summer games later this month. Olympic participants get a combination credential and visa but alternates aren’t considered part of the team and must apply for tourist visas.
The American alternates will train in Japan while team members work out in China. The alternates on the American men’s team got their tourist visas without a problem.
The U.S. women are favored to win the gold medal in the team competition at the Olympics. The Chinese have set their sights on winning both the women’s and men’s team titles on their home turf.
