BREAKING NEWS: RESIDENCE PERMIT, CHINA

Those ESLrs seeking jobs in Jilin Province, China starting in September will now require to bring an official copy of their university diploma with them.
This is a new regulation and begins in the fall of 2008.

The original diploma will be required at the time of residence application in order to receive your residence permit which is affixed into your passport and takes the place of your z visa.

They will make a copy and keep the copy, but as with the original invitation documents that you needed to obtain your z visa, you will need to show them your original diploma.

FYI

Wow, it seems like China is moving in the same direction as Korea ! Pretty soon I imagine there will be authenticated criminal background checks! Whats next, fingerprinting?

Actually, in some places such as Inner-Mongolia they have already started requiring authenticated criminal background checks. If you ask me, it is about time!

I suspect the following will become a matter of common practice in the next two years:

1. Criminal Background checks, authenticated by the FBI
2. Proof of Financial Ability to Support Oneself for the Term of duration in China.
3. Tougher educational standards enforced.

There will still be a market for under qualified individuals to teach "Oral English" in the less developed western areas, but these opportunities will soon be drying up as well.
Just my thought based on eight years experience working in the ESL market.
