HI, My dad is a US citizen. He got a L visa (6 months), traveled to Shanghai in 2006, extended his visa two times there and it's now to need to exit the country to get a new visa. I have a couple of questions:
1. Can he go to HK to get this new visa done? He wants to get at least 6 months (he can extend it two times in Shanghai). He was born in China but doesn't have a birth cert. nor a HKID card.
2. Can he apply for a residence visa? How does that work?
Your prompt reply is greatly appreciated since his visa will expired in 2 weeks and he needs to make a decision on either coming back to the US or going to HK.
Thanks so much!

In order to get residence he will need to be employed by a company authorized to host foreigners, enrolled in a University for purpose of study, or married to a Chinese national. All of these require extensive documentation and official invitations.
He can go to Hong Kong to get his visa renewed. They do not offer same day service, and we recommend getting there early. At most, without a special reason or invitation, your father will receive at best a multiple-entry or double entry visa valid for between 30-60 days for each stay. 90-days tourist visas are no longer being issued except in very special circumstances. In anticipation of your next question: It doesnt matter the visa he had before, they don't care about that, they only care about the visa he is applying for and if he has the proper documentation.
How old is he? Is he over 65? If so, he may have difficulty finding work in China as some schools and companies are reluctant to hire someone of that age unless they have a specialty they need.
Visit ou website for detailed information and maps on where and how he can get to hong Kong to process his visa.
Wish you luck!

Hi, thanks so much for your prompt reply. He will be going to HK to get the visa. He's retired so not planning to get a job in China but thank you so much for all the information. It's very helpful.

Hi, I just check out the link you attached, there is an option of mailing his passport to you for visa processing, would that work for him as well? A travel agent here in NJ told me that he can get a 1 year multi-entry visa if he had a visa before. Would you be able to do that for him? If he doesn't need to leave China, that would be the best.
Please advise.
Thanks!!
