Hi!
I’ve been waiting for the Residence permit for a long time and I’m starting to get worried.
My company handed in my z-visa and passport to the police on the 27th of May (all within the time limit). It’s the 14 July (50days) today and the police claim that they need to do further investigations before they can hand me my passport back.
I have no criminal record and all paper works has been provided, but what happens if for some reason the police decides to deny me a Residence Permit? Has anyone else been in this situation?
I’m grateful for any advice.
/ Helena

That is a very long time to have your passport in hand. Which province is this and which city? Could you provide a school name? Some locations take a really long time and we have an internal database I can search to see which schools have problems with residence formalities.
They should have your passport for no less than one week. Period. Depending on your relationship with the admin of the school, I would tell them you want your passport back. If they balk, you can either play it safe and wait it out, or tell them that if you do not have it back in four days, you intend to contact the state department.
I would be nervous too, especially since your z visa has expired and if for some reason someone was holding this off and didn't apply for residence right away, it may have been rejected and they may be either going through some back channels or having and american visa company reissue a visa to restart the process all over again. Perhaps a little bit cynical, but I have seen everything.
As contingency, do you have copies of your original invitation letters sent to you for the z visa? Have you completed the supplemental medical examination in China for the residence permit yet?
Knowing these thing will help determine where you are in the process. Thanks and good luck!

Hi, thank you for your reply! I have now received my passport and permit. I don’t know why it took so long but I’m just happy that I finally got it. Helena in Hangzhou
