How long do I have after end of contract/residence permit to leave China? Also do I have to have L-visa to do any kind of travel? I was told by one person I have 15 days. My fiancee works in another city than me, and because of J1 restrictions can not return to america with me when my contract is up. I would like to be able to spend a couple of days with her/sight see if possible, but don't want to do anything that could get me blacklisted. I will probably try to come back to China within 6 months of my return to the US. Ideally within 2 months. Biggest issue will be money to return etc. I basically spent all of my savings to come to China in the first place for this year, and it's been one expense after another since i got here. So to cut the long story not alot of savings. I have 4 months left to my contract so I hopefully can save some money before I head back to US but... I am working for an "Oral English" center in Xiangfan, Hubei Province (If you need more info PM me, as I am a little paranoid to mention my school by name) I don't know yet if I will sign on to work with them again or not, mixed experiences. Like i have heard about most "Oral English" centers, They will tell you what you want to hear to get you here, and then... A lot will depend on how I am treated when my contract is ending. I know they fought tooth and nail not to pay some things that they were to pay via contract/addendums for another teacher who's contract ended, and he renewed. They weren't even originally going to give him all of the money he was promised because he wasn't leaving China. There are some things that he wasn't reimbursed for that were promised as well. I hadn't seen any negative reviews of this company when I was first coming here, but I wouldn't be surprised if that has changed.

Normally, you have between 10 and thirty days to leave China once your contract is finished. Schools usually have you turn in your residence status and then convert it into a 10 days L tourist visa.

Check the expiry of your residence, if it is allowed for a long period of time, then do not relinquish your passport and just leave allowing you the term left on your residence.
Otherwise you will almost certainly get stuck with a 10 days L Visa requiring you to leave almost immediately.
