I am working with a recruiter to take a job in Chengdu. My question is has anyone else had to pay for their visa without being reimbursed by the school? I am being told that the actual visa must be purchased by me to the tune of 130 USD and is not refundable by the school. Is this correct?

@NOway this site is to help people, not playing mind games.
To answer the question correctly. Yes, at some school have you pay the visa fee (RMB 800), they do this because some teachers that never taught before find out that they can't handle classes and the age of children they teach, with that said, its a logical safety policy out here if a teacher does a midnight run out of the country.
So some schools pay and some school don't pay the visa fee. Either way I can make RMB 800 in two days with after school work, so its not like we're really loosing any big money.
so again,t his can be a normal situtation, dont be too scared by it, your school might be a great school, there just being a careful school, just like you're trying to be a careful applicant.

Wrong.. Shenzhen_new.. it's 400rmb in Mainlaind.. so.. your also getting ripped.. further.. it's how you negotiate or not.. whether the school really wants you or not. Reputable Schools/Business will take care of everything.. including your transportation needs for purposes of the Body cavity exams, photos, and PSB. Fees are Negotiable.. as is EVERYTHING in China. Geez... (note.. don't be another idiot.. even department stores will negotiate!) I bought a very nice kite in surburbia China for 30rmb (my local Chinese wife argued saying that I paid too much and she was very unhappy with me... but in the Capita cityl Dept Store (Tourist traps) the same kite was 435rmb... so.. get the picture? A 800rmb resident permit is for more than 365 days...which usually means someone may have really screwed up on the Contract date and Visa renewal. Howz that for a mind game.. TIC

NoWay, you know that the body cavity part of the exam was optional right?

Our school paid us back RMB 800 and that is the normal fee in Shenzhen, a teacher here thats be working for 6 years says its always been that price in shenzhen.
Different prices for different parts of china.
Woo, Noway, you really are loosing it man, cool down, relax, all is good, your fine and safe, you must have been through some really hard times in China, cause your hiding something, its all in your writing, the way you defend yourself, and also express yourself. Its easy to see through.

shenzhen_new... I've been to the Official offices of International PSB and Provincial Government which are all regulated by ???? Well.. all I will tell you.. I could be mistaken.. all you need to do is look at the application or speak with the Officials in person. I suspect you will find the truth...and many schools in China are not completely truthful.
As for your continual personal remarks and insinutations ..Knock it off!

to let you know.. the schools have no authority to keep any of your documents.. and I would suggest you never allow them to hold onto them. Also, International PSB always gives a receipt for Passports received.. YOU should have this receipt in your possession..not the school otherwise you've no evidence of your Passport.. a big deal.. only if your a visitor in China. Further.. realize the renewal times.. traveling in China means you must show your passport at hotels and upon request.. if you haven't your passport.. it could get very ugly.
Last word on this subject.. realize who are the workers at your schools.. typically they are newbies running all the errands.. maybe still students or fresh out of school in their first job. I don't trust kids with my important documents.. several times I had to chase after them to find out what is going on.. as I've traveled several Countries and my Embassies and Consulates.. they always remind me to be vigilant.. your Passport is worth more than gold in these "developing" countries.. and never forget that! I met about 6 people who had their items, backpack, luggage, purse, or other that had their passport. Getting a new one is a big hassle and not easy in any sense. plus the added expenses. A couple of them had to come to Beijing (closest for them) to apply for replacement passport.. further the ordeal took a couple of days.. luckily for one teenager..her Grandfather accompanied her and it took only about 24 hours. Register with your Embassy/Consult and keep vigilant about your surroundings. I've had a camera, electric bicycle, motorcycle, and a couple others stolen here.. the Police report alone is 2hrs.. and ZERO result.. of course.
There are some wonderful, beautiful, and clean parts of this vast country and many wonderful people to meet.. its the not so good people that I seem to run into from time to time that pose everyone a Threat... oh, to mention.. I once met a lad who commented that the locals call Xian the City of Thieves.. hmmm.. and nearly all the students I had at that school told me they all had something stolen from them. Quite the contradiction from my experiences back home. Take care.. enjoy!
